TOPIK Vocabulary List for Beginners
TOPIK Vocabulary for Beginners: Essential Words & How to Learn Them Fast
Vocabulary is the foundation of every TOPIK section — reading, listening, and (at TOPIK II) writing all depend on word recognition speed. Here's how to start correctly.
Core Vocabulary Categories for TOPIK I
- Daily life: family, food, time, weather, transportation
- Basic verbs and adjectives: action words and descriptive words used in simple sentences
- Numbers and counters: Korean has native and Sino-Korean number systems — both appear in TOPIK
- Question words and connectors: 언제, 어디, 왜, 그래서, 그런데, etc.
- Common nouns for places and objects: school, hospital, market, station
How to Memorize Efficiently
- Learn words in phrases, not isolation — "학교에 가다" (to go to school) sticks better than "학교" alone.
- Use spaced repetition — review new words after 1 day, 3 days, then 7 days.
- Group by topic, not alphabetically — your brain retains categorized information better.
- Test yourself actively — recall the Korean word from the meaning, not just recognition.
Common Mistake
Many beginners try to memorize 100+ words in one sitting and forget most within days. Consistent daily exposure (20–30 words with review) outperforms cramming every time.
How TODDLE Builds Vocabulary Systematically
Our Basic Korean Language Course (Package) introduces vocabulary in structured weekly units, reinforced through:
- Classroom repetition drills
- Memrise app assignments for daily practice outside class
- Chapter-end paper-based tests to confirm retention before moving forward
This ensures vocabulary isn't just "covered" in class but actually retained for exam day.
